RoL. Sebastian Horsley Gallery
Horsley was nailed to a cross in the Filipino village of San Pedro Cutud in order to gain an insight into crucifixion for a series of paintings on the subject. In doing so, he passed out with pain and then fell from the cross, taking the nails with him when the straps holding his arms broke.

The Filipinos, for whom the crucifixion ceremony is an annual event, claimed afterwards that God had wanted to spare his painter’s hands, although the artist maintains it was a combination of his weight and bad carpentry.

The photographer Dennis Morris, best known for his work with The Sex Pistols and Bob Marley, documented the crucifixion.

Sebastian Horsely's film "Crucifixion" was shot by Sarah Lucas and cut and scored by Gavin Rossdale, from the band Bush.

Horsley's work has been described as 'method' painting' - but there are those who feel he takes things to extremes - he first achieved notoriety as a student when he was thrown out of St Martin's School of Art for forging a document to gain a grant.

So, this is part of the story so far of an artist/writer and extremist, who feels that unless one takes things to the very edge and stares hard into the abyss, then do we really ever truly feel alive?
